On March 25, as part of the Big City Ecology Forum, a tour will be held of the Volkhonka Waste Management Plant, a modern, high-tech complex that processes 600,000 tons of waste annually.
Participants will be able to visit the closed production facility, equipped with 270 pieces of equipment, and see conveyor lines with a total length of almost 6 kilometers. The tour will demonstrate how tunnel composting technology works: in just 21 days, food waste is transformed into compostable soil.
The Volkhonka waste processing plant has become an important step in the development of waste recycling in St. Petersburg. Today, more than half of the incoming waste is recycled as secondary resources, RDF fuel, and compostable soil. This is the city’s first project on the path to achieving the 2030 goals of complete waste sorting and halving the volume of landfills.
